Introduction
The Suffolk Community Council was first organized in 1933 as a voluntary association of Suffolk professional and community people concerned about improving health and welfare services in the County. The Council was incorporated in 1964, established an office, and hired full-time staff. In 1966 Alan N. Fite was employed as the first Executive Director, who was succeeded in 1969 by Anne F. Mead. Helen J. Gould was appointed in 1973, and turned over the office upon her retirement in 1976 to Edmund L. Ross.

The earliest records in the Collection date from 1950. A review of the Constitution and Bylaws shows the gradual evolution of the objectives of the Council, which are summarized in the 1976-1977 Annual Report as follows:

The Suffolk Community Council is engaged in a wide range of activities, serving as a resource for all sectors of the County on welfare, health, education and recreation matters. It provides professionals and the public with information about critical issues; it serves as a coordinator/catalyst/advocate for agencies and their clients; it promotes innovative agency and interagency programs; it facilitates government/voluntary agency interactions; and, it offers technical assistance to both public and private organizations.

The Council's files reflect the period of professional staffing since the mid-1960's. However, during a series of moves a number of records were discarded. The remaining files in this Collection have been arranged in four broad series: Organizational Files, Committee Files, Administrative Files and Alphabetical Files.

The Preliminary Guide consists of a listing of file folder headings, most of which were on the files when received. In the Board of Directors and Annual Meeting files a number of personal files deposited by individual past officers were re-sorted to create as complete a chronological record as possible.

We are indebted to the Board of Directors of the Council, Mr. Edmund L. Ross, Executive Director, and Mr. Thomas J. Chawner, Planning Director, for donating the Council's inactive files. This collection is an important resource in the study of social welfare in Suffolk County and on Long Island.
