Introduction
The Perishable Press Limited Collection is rich source for those studying
the publishing history of a distinguished private press. Mr. Walter S.
Hamady, a renowned papermaker, printer, artist, poet, and publisher of
unusual books by hand, founded the Perishable Press in 1964 while a student
at Wayne State University.
Scope and Content
The Special Collections Department has endeavored to acquire all the
printed publications of The Perishable Press Limited, as well as its working
files. The books, pamphlets, and broadsides have been catalogued separately.
The printed ephemera has been arranged chronologically by year of printing.
The bulk of the collection has been arranged as received and is comprised
of 22 cubic feet of materials, including correspondence with authors,
binders, paper mills, and many other related persons and institutions.
Especially valuable are the carbon copies of Mr. Hamady's own letters,
shedding light on the operations of the press. Also included in this collection
are proof copies of books and broadsides, galleys, dummies and similar
materials resulting from private press publishing.
This archival collection includes inactive files covering the years from
1964 through approximately 1979. A preliminary inventory was prepared
in 1990 by Evert Volkersz, with the assistance of Diane E. Englot, Audrey
S. Koppos, and Simon Marchant. The collection was completely processed
in August 2002 by the Special Collections staff.
