Bibliography

The following bibliography is arranged alphabetically by title. This listing represents first printing, in English, of works written by Payne, and those that he edited and translated. It also includes, in the same single alphabet, titles of books containing his introductions and forewords. The list includes nineteen titles that were published with variant titles.

Each title, or variant, is represented once by earliest publication date that could be established. However, this is a bibliography-in-progress, and in many instances the first place or date of publication has not been established definitively.

The major goal in compiling this list is to establish correct names of authors and titles to assist in the arrangement and description of the Robert Payne Collection.

The entries include the author, as determined by standard cataloging practices, the title, subtitle, and other descriptive materials. Also included are the place(s) of publication, publisher(s), and date of publication, as well as notes on related titles and publications.

For convenience of processing the collection, these bibliographic listings also include broad genre headings that have been assigned in compiling this bibliography, purely to aid staff in identifying manuscripts. These include Address, Art, Autobiography, Biography, Condensations, Contributions, Editing, Forewords and Introductions, History, Novels (including historical and biographical novels and short stories), Philosophy, Poetry, Translations, and Travel. Finally, when the title is housed in the University Libraries' Main stacks or in the Special Collections Department, a call number is included.
