Introduction

Philip James (1890-1975) was a composer, organist, choir director, conductor, and chairman of New York University's Department of Music from 1941-1954. A biographical sketch and selected chronology are included in A Catalog of the Musical Works of Philip James (1890-1975) and Supplement One by Mrs. Helga James (New York, N.Y.: J. Finell Music Services, 1980). These publications may be consulted in the Special Collections Department.

Items listed in Supplement One, p.6-13, as being held in "PJL," i.e. Philip James Library, are now part of the Collection, except for A Million Little Diamonds, Noise, and Tea Table.

History

The collection (approximately 31 cubic feet) was deposited by Mrs. Helga (Boyer) James. The first installment was received in 1987. The third and final deposit was made in November 1990. The original contact with Mrs. James was through Ms. Judith Kaufman, then Music Librarian, State University of New York at Stony Brook, who she had consulted in the process of compiling the Catalog.

Copyright

Access to the collection is unrestricted. Copyright interest to the works by Philip James are retained by Mrs. Helga James. For permission, please contact the Special Collections Department, which will forward any requests.
