Preface

The AIDC 100 Archives at Stony Brook University identifies, acquires, preserves and makes available to the public, industry members, educators, and students a comprehensive and diverse library of materials that documents the AIDC (automatic identification and data capture) industry.

Introduction

The Benjamin Nelson Collection was donated to the Special Collections Department in 2002. The collection consists of 25 cubic feet of material, and consists of the personal papers and writings, promotional materials, books, videos and photographic materials collected and created by Mr. Nelson throughout his forty-five year career in the Automatic Identification and Data Capture field as an educator, author and researcher.

The collection is open to research without restrictions in accordance with general access principles and under the discretion of the staff. The collection's creator (Mrs. Nelson) holds all copyrights to his personal papers and publications. All requests to use or reproduce any of Mr. Nelson’s papers or publications should be addressed to the Special Collections Department Staff; copyrights to all remaining items within the collection (not created by Mr. Nelson) must be obtained from the owner prior to use.

In citing the collection, please credit it as follows: Benjamin Nelson Collection, Special Collections Department, University Libraries, State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Materials within this collection may be located with the use of the collection's finding aid available in hardcopy and online through the University's Library webpage.

Biographical Note

Ben Nelson was an active and positive presence in the AIDC industry from its inception in the 1970’s. He was known worldwide for his memorable seminars on the basics of bar code symbology and printing.

In 1997, Ben authored the important reference book, “Punched Card to Bar Codes.” His humor, warmth, kindness and integrity forged a rock-solid, lasting bond with all who knew him.

Ben was a co-founder of AIDC 100 in 1997 and remained a driving, inspirational force in the organization until his untimely passing.

He will be sorely missed by his friends and associates.

--AIDC 100 plaque in Mr. Nelson’s honor.

Benjamin A. Nelson (b. 1926- d. 2001) began his career in the AIDC industry with the Markem corporation, a manufacturer of industrial printing machines, working in the sales and marketing division. In 1969, while with Markem, he became involved in the first U.P.C. and LOGMARS tests. From this early beginning, Mr. Nelson became an integral part of the then fledgling AIDC industry, when it was still referred to as ‘bar coding’. As his involvement with the industry grew, Mr. Nelson was asked to serve on numerous industry trade associations (APICS, IMMS), was a valued member of the Industry Advisory Board of the School of Packaging at Michigan State University and ID Systems Magazine, and a frequent lecturer at the University of Wisconsin Management Institute. In addition to serving on various professional boards, Mr. Nelson served for two terms on the Board of Directors for the Automatic Identification Manufacturers Association.

Mr. Nelson lectured to over 275 groups around the world on the various aspects of bar coding, printing, labeling, including audiences in Europe, the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. He was also a prolific writer for ID System Magazine. For his dedication, devotion and excellence within the AIDC industry, he was awarded the prestigious Richard Dilling Award in 1985 for his efforts to create a curriculum on bar coding at the School of Packaging at Michigan State University.

In 1995, after 42 years with the Markem Corporation, Mr. Nelson retired and started Nelson Associates, a consulting firm dedicated to educating the private and public sectors on the benefits of AIDC technologies. Soon after, in 1997, he became a co-founder with George Goldberg and Chet Benoit of the AIDC 100, an independent, organization dedicated to the similar goal of spreading the word of the benefits of the AIDC technology. He worked in this capacity until his death in 2001.

Scope and Content Note

The Benjamin Nelson Collection consists of seven series: Subject Files, Writings, Lectures and Seminars, Artifacts, AV, Photographs/slides and Electronic Media.

The series' original order has been maintained where applicable and re-created in others to assist researchers more easily. Items housed in acidic or metal housings have been removed from these housings for preservation reasons and have been placed in acid free folders and containers. Photographs have been placed in acid free folders and envelopes, and were left within original series. All metal fasteners have been removed and replaced in accordance with accepted archival standards of preservation.

The most unique information may be found within Series 2: Writings. This series contains the majority of Mr. Nelson’s research into the AIDC industry and formed the foundation for his book.
