Finding aids are guides for collections. They include descriptive information about the content, including subject matter, dates of creation, and quantity. They also may include a listing of the files that are contained with a collection.

Finding aids do not include scanned images. Please contact the Head of Special Collections and University Archives for research assistance and for further information about the collections.

PREFACE

The University Archives includes material created by the University that is of enduring legal and historical value. It is also the official repository for master theses and doctoral dissertations in print format (through May 2007) and the Stony Brook Authors and Editors Collection.

The University Archives include: more than 10,000 photographs, artifacts, and memorabilia dating from 1957; complete holdings of the annual yearbook Specula and campus newspapers; audio and video recordings of campus lectures and programs; papers of distinguished faculty; and archival copies of paper-based theses and dissertations (through May 2007).


HOW TO SEARCH THE UNIVERSITY ARCHIVES

To locate books, newspapers, reports, etc., use the advanced search in STARS, the University Libraries catalog, and under "Library," select "Archives."

To locate records and files within archival collections, browse finding aids or enter a keyword(s) in the department's search engine, located on the top right of the website.
