Introduction

The Isaac Nemiroff Collection (RG 64/o1), part of Record Group 64, was accessioned into the University Archives in September of 2002. The collection was donated to Special Collections in May 1979 by Joy Nemiroff, Dr. Nemiroff's widow. The papers had originally been removed from Dr. Nemiroff's office after his death in 1977; they were then transferred to the Special Collections, where a preliminary inventory was started by the former head of the department, Evert Volkersz.

In September 2002, the finding aid was compiled. Compositions were removed from the collection; they were accessioned into the Music Library collection and Special Collections. Individual scores can be located using the library online catalog, STARS.

The collection is open to research without restrictions. Dr. Isaac Nemiroff's estate retains copyright to his personal compositions. All requests to use or reproduce any of Dr. Nemiroff's papers or publications should be addressed to staff.

When citing the collection, please credit: Dr. Isaac Nemiroff Collection, University Archives, Stony Brook University Libraries.

Biographical Note (b. 1912- d. 1977)

The following biographical note is excerpted from Career as a Composer, an autobiographical composition written by Dr. Nemiroff that was part of his application for sabbatical.

"If career as a composer implies professional recognition such as commissioned works, public performances, critical reviews, etc., it started for me with a commission to write music for modern dance in 1942. This venture culminated in a concert at the Cort Theater in New York City on April 26, 1948 given by Marie Marchowsky and Dance Company. The program consisted almost entirely of my music. That same year was my first appearance under the auspices of the International Society for Contemporary Music with my Sonata No .1 for violin and piano played by Broadus Erle and David Tudor. I believe that other such pertinent facts are performances at the Composers Forum, American Music Festival, programs at various colleges and elsewhere committed to the presentation of contemporary music, and other commissions, details regarding which are contained in the List of Works, Performances, and Publications.

I was accepted to membership in the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers in 1964, and am listed in their Biographical Dictionary, 1966 edition; also listed in Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians, fifth edition, 1958; and in the International Cyclopedia of Music and Musicians, ninth edition.

Critical reviews of some of my works include:Violin and Piano Sonata and Oboe Concerto. New York Herald Tribune: 'The Adagio and Allegro from Nemiroff's Violin-Piano Sonata and his Concerto for Oboe and Strings each laid forth dark-hued contrapuntal material and pursued an incredibly complex, interweaving set of paths. The music both strongly lyrical and unrelievedly demanding of attention....and extraordinarily handsome and colorfully communicative opus." Lester Trimble, reviewer, 3/17/58....

While I enjoy reviews such as the above I submit them not boastfully but, as an applicant for a fellowship, in the interest for presenting as much as I consider helpful for a proper assessment of my standing as a composer. Of equal pertinence do I consider the following excerpt from a letter written by Mr. Elliot Carter in response to a request from the Tenure and Promotion Committee of the University. Since Mr. Carter sent me a copy of his letter I feel free to quote from it. 'From what I have heard and seen of his music Isaac Nemiroff is a gifted and thoroughly competent composer. His work is impressive for its seriousness of purpose, its dedication to high musical intentions as well as its personal vision. It contains a wide variety of musical character which reveals a broad scope of human qualities and also an imaginative and skillful ring which indicates an awareness and sensitivity to the fundamental logic of music so important for a composer, (and not so commonly found today), especially for one who is a teacher."

Baker's Dictionary of Musicians (fifth edition, 1958) includes an entry for Dr. Nemiroff that provides additional information. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on February 16, 1912 and studied at the Cincinnati Conservatory and later with Stefan Wolpe at New York College of Music. He later went on to become an instructor at the School of Music of the Brooklyn Musical Society (1946-1948). From 1948-1952 he taught at the Contemporary Music School in NY. In 1952, he was appointed to the staff of the Greenwich House Music School. He was a founder of the music program at the newly established State University College on Long Island at Oyster Bay, where he taught until the campus was moved to Stony Brook. He spent the remainder of his career teaching at Stony Brook University until his death in 1977.

Scope and Content Note

The Dr. Isaac Nemiroff Papers consists of seven series: Accordian Files, Photographs/Slides, Recordings, Personal Compositions, Colleagues' Work, Composers' Scores, Artwork/Posters. These series encompass Dr. Nemiroff's early life as a student of music through his tenure as a Professor of Music at Stony Brook University.

Original order has been maintained where applicable and recreated in others to assist researchers. Items housed in acidic or metal housings have been removed from these housings for preservation reasons and have been placed in acid free folders and containers. Photographs have been placed in acid free folders and envelopes, and were left within original series. All metal fasteners have been removed and replaced in accordance with accepted archival standards of preservation.

The collection contains a number of interesting items, but the most telling within the collection is Series IV. Series IV contains sketches, scores, notebooks, blueprints and copies of Dr. Nemiroff's personal compositions. The series provides researchers with an overall understanding of Dr. Nemiroff's thoughts and feelings about his work, as well as providing a first hand look at how this composer edited his work, and ultimately created the finished product.

Another notable series is Series VII. Series VII contains artwork and posters given to Dr. Nemiroff by his family as well as things that he had collected over the years. Most interesting within this series are the editions of newspapers that were saved dealing with the 1969 moon landing. The series is important on a personal note when combined with correspondence found in Series I because it shows how fondly Dr. Nemiroff was thought of by friends, family and students.

One final item of note is the first alma mata song written for Stony Brook University by Dr. Nemiroff in 1962. The song was undocumented until this collection was processed (the current alma mata was commissioned in 1985).

Series Description

Series I: Files, 1938-1977, 13 linear inches. This series consists of material arranged by subject contained within Dr. Nemiroff's accordion files. The material mainly consists of correspondence and various notes on a wide range of topics.

Series II: Photographs/Slides, 1932-1974, 2.5 linear inches. Sub-series I: Photographs. Sub-series II: Slides. This series contains photographs and slides found within the accordion files. Most of the photographs are undated and unidentified, although certain photos do have gallery names on the back. The majority of photos seem to have been received by Dr. Nemiroff from other persons.

Series III: Recordings, 1905-1977, 7.5 linear inches. This series contains long play 33 1/2 rpm vinyl records; 7 1/2 in. 1/4 in. reel-to-reel recordings and audio cassettes. The recordings consist of music performed for publication by various performers and composers, however, there are some original recordings. All recordings are originals; no listening copies have been created.

Series IV: Works/Sketches, 1930-1975, 3 feet, 8 linear inches. Sub-series I: Works. Sub-series II: Theatrical and Dance scores and sketches. Sub-series III: Incomplete/Miscellaneous scores and sketches. Sub-series IV: Workbooks/notebooks. This series contains the personal works of Isaac Nemiroff. The majority of the works are complete; however, there are quite a few that are incomplete. The series has been broken down into sub-series in accordance with the original groups created prior to receipt by the University Archives.

Series V: Works of Colleagues & Students, 1949-1974, 3.5 linear inches. The series contains material given to Isaac Nemiroff throughout his career. Work is listed by colleagues' name and range from scores and recordings to poetry.

Series VI: Other Composers' Works, undated, 1 foot 3.5 linear inches. This series contains printed scores by classical composers retained by Dr. Nemiroff in what appears to be a subject file. The series has been given alphabetical order to assist researchers.

Series VII: Artwork/Posters, 1969-1974, 3.5 linear inches. This series contains artwork given to Dr. Nemiroff by his children as well as posters and other material received by him during his later years. Included in this series are editions of newspapers dealing with the US moon landing.
