Research material from Dr. Gelber's book: Politics and Public Higher
Education in New York State: Stony Brook, A Case History.
Processed by Ann Becker and Kristen Nyitray, February 2002.
Introduction
Dr. Sidney Gelber, Distinguished Service Professor and Leading Professor of Philosophy, Emeritus, at Stony Brook University published his book entitled, Politics and Public Higher Education in New York State: Stony Brook - A Case History in 2001. As stated by Dr. Gelber, "New York was the last state in the Union to create in 1948 a state-supported system of higher education, and Stony Brook became its first comprehensive University Center formed de novo in 1957, joining with other state universities in democratizing higher education." Dr. Gelber's book "probes the politcal conditions and bureacratic actions that contributed to Stony Brook's struggle to emerge as a major research university, gaining international pre-eminence."
The manuscript collection consists of all of the research files and
oral history tapes created and utilized by Dr. Gelber. The collection's
original alphabetic order has been maintained where applicable and re-created
in others to assist researchers more easily. Items housed in acidic
or metal housings have been removed from these housings for preservation
reasons. These materials have been placed in acid free folders and containers
in accordance with accepted archival standards of preservation.
