Introduction
Dr. Hartzell was Stony Brook's Chief Administrative Officer from 1962 until the appointment of Dr. John S. Toll as President in 1965. He subsequently served as Administrative Officer in the President's Office until his retirement in 1970. Together with his wife, Ann Hartzell, Dr. Hartzell hosted many social functions. Dr. Hartzell continued his affiliation with various university-related activities in retirement, including working with the Institute for Advanced Studies of World Religions, which was housed in the University Library until it moved in 1989.
The Hartzells were also involved with many musical activities, which culminated in the formation of the Long Island Philharmonic.
In December 1991, Mrs. Ann Hartzell donated materials that pertain to the social functions held by the university from 1962-1969. The bulk of the collection is comprised of acceptances or regrets to various receptions, teas, luncheons, picnics, dinners for senior classes, and commencements.
