Recalls, Holds, Search Requests
Stony Brook University students, faculty, staff, or the Library Reserve Department may initiate a Recall / Hold Request when a book is already checked out to another patron. A recall means that the original due date will be changed so that the item will be due sooner. Patrons needing to recall an item must complete a Recall/Hold Request form, located at the Circulation Desk. A Hold may also be placed on-line. There are no phone-initiated holds or recalls.

All library materials, except AV (audio-visual) items and items on Reserve, are subject to recall at any time. A notification letter or e-mail will be sent out to the original borrower if an item has been recalled.

Staff will place a hold, rather than a recall, on an item that is due within a week or two of the original due date for a patron placing a Recall / Hold Request. No notification will be sent to the original borrower when a hold is placed, since the due date will not change.

Patrons requesting a Recall/Hold will be notified when the item becomes available. Normally, the material will be available for pick up at a Circulation Desk of the library where the material is housed for 7 days from the date of notification. Please consult the individual libraries for further information. All borrowers are subject to fines for failure to return recalled items by the recall due date.

Search Requests
Search Requests may be requested for materials which are listed as "Not Checked Out" in the online catalog, but which you are unable to locate on the shelves. Forms are available at any Service Desk. If the item cannot be located, it will be declared Missing and you will have the option of requesting through Interlibrary Loan.
