Fine Policies

Library patrons are responsible for knowing the Library's Fines Policies. Failure to understand these policies will not excuse you from payment of late return fines or for billed library material. Please refer to the Fines and Fees schedule below, or consult with staff for fine or billing information. All patrons are responsible for late return fees, late recall return fees and billed items.

*Reserve fees are extremely high due to the nature of the loan period and the high demand for these items. Fines will not be waived for overdue Reserve material.
Recalled items**	$1.25/day from new due date	$15.00 / item
**Maximum Recall Fine before being billed $85.00 for lost copy costs of item is $15.00 and you will be blocked from borrowing library materials.
Videos	$1.00 / day	$15.00 / video

Damaged / Destroyed / Lost material - please be sure to inform library staff if you feel that an item being checked out to you is damaged or fragile, so as not to be held responsible for damaged item fees. Library patrons are responsible for all material checked out on their record. The library cannot assume the loss of state property for items accidentally damaged, destroyed or lost while in the possession of the borrower.

Lost Item Fee - once the maximum fine is reached you will be billed a lost item fee of $85.00 for a book, or $100.00 for AV material. As the item will be considered lost, you will be blocked from borrowing library materials. If you return the billed item, the lost item fee will be waived, but you will be held liable for the maximum fine and a billing fee.

Replacing an Item Yourself - if you choose to replace an item yourself (instead of paying the lost item fee) there will be a $16.50 Processing Fee. The item must be the same edition or newer. If the lost item was hard bound, it may be replaced with a soft cover. You may replace the lost item with a used copy; however, the library reserves the right to refuse the copy. The replacement copy cannot be an item from another library.

Making a Payment

1. Pay in Person:
a) The Bursar's Office in the Administration Building. Weekdays, 8:30am - 4pm. The Bursar accepts all forms of payment. You can pay by phone during the Bursar's normal business hours. The number is 631-632-6117.
OR
b) The Circulation Accounts Office (Photocopy Room), located on the 3rd floor of the Melville Library Building, in the Main Circulation Library. Make your payment in cash weekdays 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., or by check or money orders up until 15 minutes before closing. Make your check payable to “SUNY at Stony Brook.” Include your Solar Number or SBU ID number on the check or money order to receive proper credit.

2. Mail-in a Check / money order (but not cash) to:

Notices

Notices for overdue materials are sent as a courtesy reminder. You will also be sent notices for fines, bills for lost materials, recalled items, and available items. Email notices will be sent to your campus email account. Current address information must be accurate. If you do not receive library notices, it is not the responsibility of the library. Suspension of Borrowing Privileges

Any of these conditions will restrict you from checking out or renewing library material:
-you are a student, but you have not enrolled this semester
-you have accrued fines totaling $5.00 or more
-you are a Special Borrower who has accrued fines totaling $1.00 or more
-you have reached the maximum number of items allowed
-you have reached a renewal limit for an item
-you have one or more overdue recalled items
-you owe money to another SUNY library through the Open Access Borrowers Program, Interlibrary Loan or through the Research Loan Program
-your ID card has expired
-your address is invalid
