Maps of New York State and Long
Island can be found in many places. In the U.S. sheet maps section, you
can find a wide range of town maps, thematic maps, and aerial photographs.
Note that the maps for New York City and Long Island file together after
the other New York State maps (rather than by Library of Congress call number).
If this were not the case, maps of New York City and Long Island towns would
be interfiled with other towns in New York State. Topographic maps of New York State are filed in alphabetical order with the other topographic maps. The index for the 7.5 minute topographic maps of New York should be on top of the map cabinet. The older 15 minute maps are kept in the locked map case after the 7.5 minute maps. Note that the most recent topographic maps for Long Island are produced by New York State rather than by the U.S.G.S. These are cataloged and filed separately in the U.S. sheet map section (Map G3800.S24.N41). A selection of town maps, road maps, and tourist information for New York State, Long Island, and New York City is kept in the white file cabinets in the map reference desk (see map of the map collection). Look for the relevant labels on the drawers. Many historical maps of New York and Long Island can be found in both the Map Reserve Room and in the Special Collections Department. A large and growing collection of local and regional maps is also available in computerized form (see digital maps). |
