Books on Cartographic Materials
These books are cataloged and shelved on the wall near near the foreign sheet maps. Their location on STARS is "Maps Collection/Reference" The red dots on the spine of these books distinguish them from other cataloged books in the Map Collection (atlases and gazetteers) Almost all maps relating to the oceans, such as nautical charts and bathymetric maps, are now located at the Marine and Atmospheric Sciences Information Center (MASIC) on the South Campus. The map collection retains a few general maps of the oceans and some historical nautical charts. Historical nautical charts of the Long Island area are filed in the cabinet in the Map Reserve Room. The others are filed by call number with the U.S. and foreign sheet maps, except for a group of old nautical charts filed under maps of the world in series. The Map Collection does not collect satellite images extensively. A few poster-type maps derived from satellite images are filed with the U.S. sheet maps. Satellite image based posters of New York City and Long Island are kept in the Map Office. A number of recent atlases include satellite images, particularly Ryder's Standard Geographic Reference: Satellite Photo-Atlas of the United States of America(Map/Atlas QB 637.R9). Good digital color satellite images of most major cities of the U.S. can be found in Small Blue Planet: The Cities Below (Video and Microforms CD-ROM 44) |
