Wiener Reference Department Central Reading Room, Frank Melville Jr. Library 631.632.7110 The Video Collection is probably the largest collection of video and cinema titles in any Long Island academic setting. Currently there are more than 5800 VHS video titles and 1600 DVDs to serve the campus' instructional, curricular, and cultural needs. About 70 12" laserdiscsare housed in the Learning Center, located on the 5th floor of the Melville Library, and, like many DVDs, have special features with supplementary materials, soundtracks and/or graphics. The Collection includes feature films of every genre, in many languages, and from every era and country. There are also hundreds of educational films, most of the major PBS series, all of Shakespeare's plays (many in several versions), many Greco-Roman classic plays, language instruction tapes, news documents, archival footage, lectures, and tapes that cannot be found anywhere else. Almost all materials may be borrowed for 7 days by students or any member of the Stony Brook faculty and professional staff showing current SBU ID. There are stiff fines for late and lost materials. Faculty may request materials for Reserve use. Different viewing and charge-out options may apply to Reserve items. Titles reserved for classes may not be available for general circulation during a given semester. Instructors are encouraged to submit Course Reserve lists before the end of the previous semester. For a complete list of audio-visual policies and procedures, refer to the Policies and Guidelines section.. It is possible to view most VHS and DVD materials in the AV Viewing Room located in Core East on the third floor of the Main Stacks, on a first-come basis, but space is limited. Other viewing areas are located in the Music Library and the Learning Center. Films are listed in the Library's online catalog, STARS, and can be searched by title, director, actor, topic and other identifiers by using the Keyword (with Format) search command and the Alphabetical Browse search command. Journals about movies may be found by title or subject using the Search the Journal Catalog link. Please note: the terms "movies" and film" are not always accurate descriptors; words such as "cinema," "motion picture, and "video" and genre terms such as "film noir," "musicals" or "westerns" may also produce useful results. Requests for additions to the collection are welcomed and should be addressed to Paul Wiener, who is also available for consulting, instruction, teaching suggestions, and guidance on how to access materials we do not own or cannot borrow for free (e.g., 16 mm films or videos requiring rental fees). The Reference Collection in the Central Reading Room includes a collection of catalogs, indexes, scholarly tools, and other resources that supports cinema research and the Video Collection. Online guidance to film information is available from the Library Home Page at the Film Studies link (under Subject Guide to Databases) or at the Film & Media link (under Internet Sites for Research). For additional assistance please ask at the Reference Desk. |
