September 9, 2005  In order to protect the privacy of circulation records, the Library will purge circulation histories once a year, on the first day of October.
NOTE: as of October 6, 2005, this policy has not been implemented and is under review.
Although this action eliminates information useful to both users and staff, it strengthens our safeguards agains government inspection of individuals' borrowing histories. This action also brings us into line with the practices of most academic libraries. If you have questions, please contact the Circulation Department at 2-7115.
August 30, 2005   Free subscriptions to Cell.
Because Stony Brook's Health Sciences Library subscribes to Cell online, any current member of the University can order his or her own free print subscription. The print version of the journal includes advertising about new products and services, conference announcements, and job opportunities. [Free Subscription Order Form]
December 9, 2004   Renewal of library materials
Faculty, Management Confidential and Professional staff who currently have borrowed library material from the Main, Music and Science/Engineering Library, with a due date of 12/17/04 are urged to renew at this time. The new due date, after properly renewing, will be 5/18/05. Please remember that library material can only be renewed three times. For information on how to renew via STARS/OPAC, and other renewal information click here. To renew in person, please present your ID card to service desk staff. It is not necessary to bring the material into the library in order to have them renewed. There are no phone renewals. Thank you.
December 9, 2004   Electronic reserve now available
SBU Libraries, West Campus, is pleased to announce a new Electronic Reserves service option for the Spring 2005 semester. Documents selected by faculty will be digitized by library staff, in accordance with Fair Use and other copyright guidelines, and centrally managed through the Blackboard system.
Faculty must first request an E-Reserves course in Blackboard. Once the course has been created, documents are requested through an on-line form on the Reserves webpage, and library Reserve staff will add them to your E-Reserves Blackboard course.

November 19, 2004   Library hours extended
Dec. 1 - 18: the Commuter Lounge will be open 24/7. Escort/walk service will be provided to accompany students back to their dorms or parking lots.
Dec. 6 - 16: the North Reading Room will be open until 4:00am Sunday to Thursday, except Friday Dec. 10 and Saturday Dec. 11 when the NRR will close at midnight. After the regular closing time, a university ID will be required to enter the NRR.
July 4th weekend, 2004   STARS scheduled maintenance
The catalog portions of the production system will be reindexed on the July 4th weekend. The production library catalog will not be available during this period. Circulation services will be available through the Windows based client, but the response time may be degraded. Patrons will not be able to view the Magellan's catalog though the STARS while this is underway and they will not be able to renew books through the Web OPAC. STARS requests will be redirected to the PYXIS version of STARS during the period of the outage. The reindexing will begin after system backups on the evening of Friday, July 2nd. The reindexing to be complete by the start of business on Tuesday, July 6th.
January 23d, 2004   Contracts with Wiley and Springer Verglag were not renewed
Due to budget constraints, the Library was unable to renew the contracts which provided us online access to the complete collections of journals available from Wiley and Springer Verlag. Only those journals to which we directly subscribe will now be available online. If there are individual titles that you feel should be added to our online collection, please contact the appropriate library selector for your department.
December 2003    Library Extended Hours for Finals, Dec. 8th to 18th, NRR
The University Main Library is pleased to announce that extended library hours will be provided to help students prepare for final exams. From Dec. 8th to 18th the North Reading Room (Sci&Eng Library) will be available for 4 additional hours beyond the regular closing time.
                  Sunday - Thursday: until 4am
                  Friday : until 12am
                  Saturday: until 10pm

There will be library staff on-duty. Circulation services (including reserve materials) will be closed at the regular time. SBU ID Cards will be required to enter the library during extended hours. Food and drink is prohibited, with the exception of bottled water. This policy will be strictly enforced. Uniformed guards will be present to verify IDs, check for food, control the noise, and ensure that the Sci&Eng Library will continue to be a safe place for students to study. (Note: On Dec. 19th, the library will be closed at regular time, 8pm and on Dec. 20th open 9am-1pm for finals of Sat classes)

In addition, the Commute Lounge located in the Library Building will be open 24 hours starting Dec. 1st.

November 2003.   Library Material Renewal Time
Faculty, Professionals, Emeritus and Mgmt Confidential who have material from the Main, Music and Sci/Eng libraries with due dates of Dec. 19/20, 2003, need to renew items now. The new due date will be May 19, 2003
