Internships

Students participate in both on-campus and off-campus news internships every semester. Faculty mentors follow the interns' progress, meeting regularly to help students develop both craft and workplace savvy. Among the organizations where Stony Brook student journalists have interned in the past year are the Southampton Press, Newsday, The Daily News, News12 and Glamour magazine.

One of the most technologically-advanced newsrooms in the country was officially opened today when Stony Brook University’s School of Journalism unveiled its "Newsroom of the Future." September 26, 2007:Stony Brook University Announces Nation’s First Center For News Literacy
STONY BROOK, N.Y., September 26, 2007—Stony Brook University’s School of Journalism announced today that it would establish the nation’s first Center for News Literacy designed to educate current and future news consumers on how to judge the credibility and reliability of news. Marcy McGinnis, an Emmy Award-winning former senior executive at CBS News and one of the most respected broadcast journalists in the nation, has been named Associate Dean at Stony Brook University’s School of Journalism. September 4, 2007:Newsroom of the Future Opens with Start of Fall 2007 Semester
One of the most technologically advanced newsrooms in the country opened as classes began Sept. 4 at Stony Brook University’s School of Journalism. The two-level newsroom on the ground floor of the Melville Library, at the center of Stony Brook’s sprawling modern campus, is the journalism program’s primary teaching space and laboratory for print, broadcast and online courses. May 9, 2007: SOJ's News Literacy Featured in New York Times
"Telling Bogus From True: A Class in Reading News" by Alan Finder
The New York Times outlines Professor Schneider's innovative approach to teaching: Mr. Schneider and his colleagues approach the subject from an array of angles. The class watches “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart, and debates whether it is news or entertainment. They read news articles and commentary, and then formulate critical distinctions between the two. They try to differentiate journalism and propaganda, and they discuss what makes something news and who gets to decide. They scrutinize newspaper and television news stories, analyzing which kinds of sources are reliable and which are not.

April 13, 2007: Award-Winning Reporter Bob Woodward visits Stony Brook University
Bob Woodward, who helped transform American investigative journalism and who has authored 11 national bestsellers, lectured at Stony Brook University in a special two-day appearance sponsored by the School of Journalism. Woodward, who, along with Carl Bernstein won the Pulitzer Prize in 1973 for their groundbreaking series of stories on the Watergate scandal for the Washington Post, spoke to the campus and the public on April 11, and visited a journalism class on April 12. March 12, 2007: New Course Called “Journalism Without Walls” Approved
An innovative new course that will send SB journalism students around the nation and the world was approved by the University’s Arts and Sciences Curriculum Committee. Students will be assigned as part of a team to travel to the location of a news event and use only mobile technology to transmit stories and video from the field. Locations may range from New Orleans to one of the upcoming national political conventions and will include overseas destinations, as well. Student work will be published via a special Web site. The course will be offered during summer and winter sessions. “Journalism Without Walls” is one of 12 new journalism courses recently approved by the curriculum committee.

March 2, 2007: Newsroom of the Future to Open in the Fall

Oct. 23 , 2006: SB and Knight Foundation Pioneer Nation's First Course in News Literacy
Stony Brook University and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation will pioneer the nation’s first university-wide course in News Literacy designed to teach students how to judge the reliability and credibility of news. The Knight Foundation has awarded a $1.7 million grant to Stony Brook for the project, in which the university is committed to teaching the newly-developed course to more than 10,000 students over four years. July 17, 2006: SB School of Journalism announced
Stony Brook University announced today the establishment of New York State’s first undergraduate School of Journalism at a public university. The new School, which will begin offering a Bachelor’s degree program in the Fall 2006 semester, will offer one of the nation’s first courses in News Literacy, designed to help students use their critical thinking skills to judge the credibility and reliability of the news.
