Stony Brook University's School of Journalism Dean Howard Schneider and Associate Dean Marcy McGinnis hosted a select group of internationally respected journalists and media figures, university presidents and deans, high school teachers, foundation leaders and policy makers to discuss and provide a strategy on how to teach News Literacy to undergratuate and high school students at the first-ever national conference on News Literacy, March 11-13, 2009.
A news media panel was moderated by Andrew Heyward, former President of CBS
News, and included Ted Koppel, far left, former anchor of ABC News and managing editor of the Discovery Channel, Vivian Schiller, President and CEO of NPR, Alexandra Wallace, Senior Vice President of NBC News and Neil Budde, President of DailyMe.com. The panel discussed the role of the news media in educating news consumers.
Stony Brook University President Shirley Strum Kenny moderated a panel of university presidents to discuss how News Literacy could be incorporated into a curriculum for the 21st Century. The panel included Nancy Cantor, President, Syracuse University
, Brady Deaton, Chancellor, University of Missouri, John Lombardi, President, Louisiana State University and Sanford J. Ungar, President, Goucher College.
Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., Chairman and Publisher of The New York Times delivered the keynote address on Thursday, March 12. Go here to read the entire keynote speech.
An opening reception and dinner for all attendees and special guests was hosted by President Kenny at her home Wednesday, March 11.
