Student Guide

Wireless (AirNet)

Campus wireless access is available for all faculty, staff and students through AirNet.

Limited Network Access

  • Recommended for mobile devices such as cell phones and PDA's.

AirNet limited network access is available by simply authenticating yourself with your NetID and NetID password at the AirNet welcome screen displayed in your browser. Only public or encrypted services will be allowed. These services include regular Web access (http), secure Web access (https), telnet using secure shell (SSH), and remote desktop protocol (rdp). If your browser does not automatically redirect itself to the login page, type stonybrook.edu into the browser and hit enter. This should help the browser redirect itself to the login page.

If you are idle for 10 minutes while using limited network access, you will lose what you are working on and be asked to sign in again with your NetID and NetID password. The same thing will happen after 60 minutes.

Normal Network Access

  • Recommended for laptop computers.

For normal network access (to use AOL client, MySBfiles, Lotus Notes, access to shares, etc.), the AirNet client must be downloaded to your desktop and installed. You can download the AirNet client from Softweb. To access wireless using the AirNet client, launch the client via the desktop icon and authenticate using your NetID and NetID password. Below are instructions on how to configure the AirNet client.

Mac OS X

GuestNet

Some guests of the University can use wireless through GuestNet, a wireless network for conferences/seminars held at Stony Brook University. To connect, all guest accounts require a username and password. These accounts are temporary and only last the length of the conference. Any department hosting a conference can request guest accounts by e-mailing telnet@notes.cc.sunysb.edu. These requests must be received at least 48 hours in advance.
