Questions? Get Help

All registered students at Stony Brook can get an account on the Teaching, Learning + Technology UNIX server named Sparky. This account allows students to send and receive e-mail from on and off campus.

Getting An Account

E-mail accounts are generated automatically for new students. Log in to SOLAR to find out your Sparky userID, initial password and e-mail address. This information can be found in SOLAR under Security and Personal Data > Unix (Sparky) Account Info.

If you do not have the Unix (Sparky) Account Info link in SOLAR and want to open a Sparky e-mail account, you must go in person to one of the following computer labs:

  • Main Library SINC Site, Room S-1460 of the Frank Melville Jr. Memorial Library
  • Student Union SINC Site, Room 080 (basement)
  • Computing Center, Dispatch Room 138
  • Health Science Center Computer Room, HSC Library, 3rd Floor
