Staff Guide - Getting Started with SBU Information Technology

Web/Videoconferencing

Teaching, Learning + Technology manages Stony Brook University's Web videoconferencing service made possible by Adobe Acrobat Connect software. With this software, multiple individuals can meet in a virtual conference room to share and record video, voice and data.

Faculty, staff and students can all use Adobe Connect as long as they have a NetID. You will need the most recent version of Adobe Flash Player. Flash Player is standard in most Internet browsers. You can find out which version of Flash Player you have at the Adobe Flash Web site.

If you will be broadcasting video and/or voice during an Adobe Connect meeting you will need a Web camera, microphone and headset. A headset with a built-in microphone is recommended to reduce audio echo and feedback.

Visit the Teaching, Learning + Technology Web pages dedicated to Web Conferencing to learn more about using this service.

Javits Videoconference Room 223

Stony Brook has a facility for videoconferencing on the second floor of the Javits Lecture Center (room 223). The system used is a Polycom 8000 with one video camera that can be tracked to a speaker's voice or set to a fixed location. It can connect using either the Internet or an ISDN line and is certified for all current industry standards. It is also capable of hosting a multi-site videoconference. The room can fit eight people at the conference table with a maximum capacity of approximately 20 people. This room is best suited for dissertations and defenses as well as small classes and administrative functions. Arrangements can usually be made for larger groups.
