Minitab

Description:
Statistical software used to analyze business data in order to ultimately improve the quality of goods and services.

Licensing/Cost:
Minitab may be installed on any computer owned and/or operated by Stony Brook University. Authorized users include SUNY employees, faculty members, students, volunteers or agents performing work for SUNY’s benefit. Authorized users may install the software on (1) their workstations at work, (2) their workstations at home, and (3) their portable (laptop) computers, as well as access the software online from a licensed processor. The software is available to students, faculty, and staff for $5. Minitab expires each year on August 31st. Faculty or staff managing instructional labs may submit a request for funding from Teaching, Learning + Technology.

  • To install Minitab 15 locally, do the following:
    • Run the Minitab installation by double-clicking the Minitab 15 English .msi file
    • Launch Minitab 15. When prompted to enter the license manager or choose a file, select the second radio button "Specify the License File."
    • Browse to the minitab.lic file contained in the directory where Minitab is installed (C:\Program Files\Minitab15) and select Open.
    • Click OK to launch Minitab

SAS

Description:
An integrated system of software providing complete control over data access, management, analysis, and presentation.

Licensing/Cost:

Students: The license fee for SAS is $22.00 plus tax. Students must bring their Stony Brook ID card to Seawolves MarketPlace in the Student Activities Center to obtain the installation DVD. Students will receive a copy of the student use agreement and a set of installation instructions. Software licensing is renewed annually, but there is no additional fee if you are still a Stony Brook student.

Faculty and Staff: The current license fee is $100.00 per workstation license. Upon receipt of payment, the software will be released and installation support will be made available to you through Client Support. Software licensing is renewed annually on July 1st.

The SAS Education Analytic Suite is sold separately based on Teaching/Research or Administration usage. SAS has chosen to separate licenses by these types of use, recognizing that these two distinct groups have very different software needs.

  • Teaching/Research: As defined by SAS, software used for purposes of classroom instruction, academic research, and course work primarily related to customer's post-secondary degree requirements. Used by students, faculty, and staff supporting such use.
  • Administrative: As defined by SAS, software used for purposes directly related to customer's operations as a post-secondary degree granting institution. This includes institutional research and any such use related to reporting about the University to the University. Such software may be used by customer's administrative employees (including faculty performing administrative duties) for such administrative purposes.

Faculty and Staff: Contact Client Support at (631) 632-9800 with questions concerning SAS installation. You must purchase your SAS license before the software can be installed on your machine. Contact SAS directly for all other technical support questions.

SPSS

Description:
SPSS is a statistical and data management software package used for analysis and research.

Licensing/Cost:
Stony Brook University students, faculty and staff can purchase SPSS for SUNY academic purposes. Brookhaven National Laboratory computers and staff are not eligible. SPSS expires each year on May 31st. It is not prorated. Regardless of when you purchase the software, it will still expire on May 31.
