Major Research Projects of ICB&DD in the First 5 Years
The ICB&DD will integrate the existing strengths at Stony Brook University in the basic medical sciences as well as medicinal chemistry and bring in complementary expertise from outside to explore drug discovery and development. Initially, ICB&DD will focus on drug discovery in i) Cancer, ii) Infectious Diseases-Biological Weapons, and iii) Diabetes/Obesity, wherein high level expertise already exists on the Stony Brook campus.
In addition to the 3 major research projects mentioned above, ICB&DD has initiated a close collaboration with the Institute for the Conservation of Tropical Environments (ICTE) at Stony Brook (Dr. Patricia Wright, Director). This ambitious joint project between ICB&DD and ICTE was initiated in response to the call from the International Cooperative Biodiversity Group (ICBG) Program at NIH as well as the Fogarty International Center. The planning grant titled "Drug Discovery & Biodiversity Conservation in Madagascar" (Dr. Ojima, Principal Investigator, Dr. Wright, Co-Principal Investigator) was funded and excellent progress has already been made in establishing a truly cooperative international team including researchers from Madagascar, California Academy of Sciences, and a University as well as industry in Italy. This clearly shows the advantages of the dynamic nature of ICB&DD.
