Human Resource Services Workshops
HRS offers the following workshops at least once per semester. We are always working to improve our offerings, and if you have suggestions for workshops you would like to see please let us know.
- Graduate Student Workshop
This training will provide you with a step-by-step explanation of the hiring process, reappointment process, additional supplements, lump sums, summer appointments and required documentation for hiring graduate students. We will also review the form I-9 process as needed.
- State Appointments
This training will provide you with information for New hire/Re-hire Packages and Appointment Types, Position and Other Changes, Non-Renewal Process, Permanent Appointment Process, Performance Program and Compliance and much more for Non-Teaching Professional employees.

This workshop will help provide you with information about Civil Service list appointments, canvassing lists, transfers, types of appointments, and much more...
- I9 - WC0007
This training will provide you with a step-by-step explanation of what the employer must do in order to meet legal and procedural responsibilities associated with the Form I-9. We will focus on how to correct common mistakes and omissions that delay the hiring process, and will provide answers to frequently asked questions regarding documentation
- Permanent Appointments
This workshop will provide information covering eligibility, initiating and completing the Permanent Appointment Process for UUP employees.
- Mastering Performance Reviews
Comprehensive overview of the complete performance management process; from preparation to administering the annual appraisal. This course focuses on the performance MANAGEMENT process - not the completion of the annual performance EVALUATION.
This class will assist you with implementing the FMLA law.
- RF Appointments
Learn about the packages, forms and the guidelines
- TMS102 Part 1 Writing Position Descriptions
This workshop will allow you to write accurate position (job) descriptions which will facilitate recruitment, compensation/classification, training, staff development, and performance management. Participants will learn to create requisitions within the Taleo Talent Management System.
- TMS102 Part 2, Search and Selection
Review the search and selection process, while gaining skills in resume screening and interviewing techniques. Overview of the Applicant Tracking System and expectations when conducting a search.
- TMS103, Offer Grid
This course will give you step by step instructions to create a candidate offer grid, submit it for approval, and send a candidate an offer within Taleo. This course is taught by HR professionals from our Appointments and Payroll areas to help ensure you know exactly what information you will need for the final offer approval.
- Counseling and Discipline
This program will provide supervisors and managers with information and guidance regarding Counseling and Discipline.
The session includes:
- How and when to conduct a counseling session.
- The difference between a verbal and a written counseling.
- How to write a counseling memo.
- How to identify problem situations.
- How to determine when to counsel and employee and when to seek disciplinary action.
- SBU Reporting Training for Finance VP Reporting User
The training session will offer an introduction to SBU Reporting for Finance VP Reporting Users. Topics include how to navigate in the system, adjusting report criteria, drilling to detail on reports, and an overview of report purposes and functionalities. SBU Reporting for Finance access is required in order to attend this hands-on workshop.
- SBU Reporting Training for Finance SBF Account Users
The training session will offer an introduction to SBU Reporting for SBF Account Users. Topics include how to navigate in the system, adjusting report criteria, drilling to detail on reports, and an overview of report purposes and functionalities. SBU Reporting for Finance access is required in order to attend this hands-on workshop.

New Employee Orientation
This training is required of all newly hired Stony Brook University employees. All New Employees will be enrolled in the appropriate New Employee Orientation (Part 1) session within 30 days of their start date.
