What To Consider

  1. To equitably determine the appropriate starting salary, you should consider:
    • The candidate's salary history.
    • The candidate's special skills or training.
    • The current salaries of peers in both the department and throughout the campus.
  2. If you see a need for a salary above the midpoint, the department head should submit a request to Classification and Compensation which includes:
    • The candidate's salary history.
    • The candidate's special skills and training.
    • Information related to the salary of peers and supervising managers together with a narrative explaining the reasons for the amount requested.
  3. General guidelines:
    • No employee should be paid below the minimum of the salary grade.
    • A potential new employee should not begin work until the offer package is signed and the necessary appointment papers are processed.
