New Hire Salary Guidelines
Definitions
- Salary Grade
- Refers to the compensation level of employees in a particular category, classification or level
- Salary Range
- Refers to the range of appropriate salaries within each grade.
- Hiring Range
- Refers to the range of appropriate salary paid to new hires.
A newly hired employee's salary should generally fall between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range for the position.
What To Consider
- To equitably determine the appropriate starting salary, you should consider:
- The candidate's salary history.
- The candidate's special skills or training.
- The current salaries of peers in both the department and throughout the campus.
- If you see a need for a salary above the midpoint, the department head should submit a request to Classification and Compensation which includes:
- The candidate's salary history.
- The candidate's special skills and training.
- Information related to the salary of peers and supervising managers together with a narrative explaining the reasons for the amount requested.
- General guidelines:
- No employee should be paid below the minimum of the salary grade.
- A potential new employee should not begin work until the offer package is signed and the necessary appointment papers are processed.
