Assess the Strengths of your transcript

There is more to your academic history than just a GPA, and the schools you apply to are going to analyze your transcript(s) very carefully. What are they looking for?

  • Schools of the health professions look at your transcript in the hope of finding a consistent track record of quality work--hopefully very few or no grades of C or below. Schools look very closely at the natural science courses that you took and will pay special attention to your grades in basic prerequisites like Chemistry, Physics, and Biology.
  • Schools will look to see where and when you took your courses. So, for instance students with high GPAs might not stand up under close scrutiny if they went and did most of their science prerequisites at community colleges in the summer. So, always make decisions that result in your having a transcript you can be proud of. Hopefully, you avoided the extremes of course loads so heavy that your grades suffer terribly or of a creampuff schedule that is too easy to be of any serious value as an indication of what you can do
  • Schools look at your transcript as a record of your decisions, of how you overcome problems and of how you capitalize on your successes.
