Clinical Research Internship at Emergency Medicine

The Emergency Medicine Department of University Medical Center at Stony Brook is an acknowledged leader in clinical research. It is the region's only level one trauma center, a major American teaching hospital and ranks as a class I research university. The Academic Associate position you are interested in was created in 1994 by Drs. Judd Hollander (Director of Emergency Medicine Clinical Research), and Gerard Brogan (Director of Quality Assurance), and Sharon Valentine, RN (Research Coordinator) to support the research initiatives of the Emergency Department. It is a unique opportunity to participate in clinical research, observe Emergency Department (ED) operations and learn from the physicians, nurses, and staff of ED. The Academic Associate position is an important responsibility requiring maturity, initiative, diligence and excellent interpersonal skills.

You can take this one credit internship up to three times (pass/fail grading) as a student or for no academic credit as a volunteer. There is no limit on the number of semesters you can volunteer. You will be required to work one 4-hour shift per week for the entire semester. You will get to choose your shift and day at the orientation for this internship. In addition to acquiring experience in conducting and collecting medical research data and acquiring familiarity with emergency department systems and operations, Associates can earn the respect and recognition of the distinguished Medical School faculty.

The data collected by the Academic Associates is analyzed and interpreted by the research faculty and their associates in support of a number of ongoing studies and quality assurance (QA). Whether the studies yield new applications to the Emergency Department or long-term procedural changes in Emergency Medicine, the benefits accrue to medical knowledge, and ultimately to superior patient care.

Make sure to go to a mandatory orientation session at the beginning of the semester. Everyone is required to be at the first session .

You need to take an online course before you can participate in this research internship.

Keep in mind that volunteers must start getting all their required paperwork cleared by the Volunteer Office ASAP. Volunteers will need to attend a general volunteer orientation before the 2-day ER orientation.

If you want to take the course for credit, you must have your SolarSystem ID number at the orientation on September 7, 2004.
