Asking for letters of recommendation: basic points for applicants

  • Start asking for letters of recommendation now, today, this very hour if possible. By no means should you delay in starting.
  • Are you saying to yourself, "I don't know any professors well?" Go out and start visiting your professors during office hours as soon as possible. Ask good questions, stop by a few times, and then ask for a letter of recommendation if you have earned a good grade in the class.
  • Get a representative set of letters: one from your major department, one from a professor who taught one of your premed courses, one from a research supervisor or from a health care professional,
  • Three is the minimum number of letters you need to get. There is no maximum.
  • Remember this: You want your application to be a standout. To accomplish this, you need to step out of the crowd, become acquainted with some of your professors, and ask for letters of recommendation.
