SBU to Host SENCER Summer Institute on STEM Education

This year Stony Brook will host its first SENCER Summer Institute, which will be held on campus August 3 through August 6. This is the 17th Summer Institute for SENCER (Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities) — the signature program for the National Center for Science and Civic Engagement, which is housed in the Department of Technology and Society at Stony Brook. This national program focuses on curricular innovation and professional development in STEM education.

Fotis Sotiropoulos

Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. will give the welcome address. Fotis Sotiropoulos, Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, will deliver the opening plenary and discuss the role of educational institutions in developing civic capacity and awareness in STEM learning in the era of exponential technological growth.

A roster of national figures will join Dean Sotiropoulos, giving plenary talks that address a variety of critical areas, including:

  • Conversations about the changing landscape for civic engagement as a pedagogical approach
  • Educational synergies between STEM and the humanities
  • Strategies for scaling STEM education reform efforts
  • Challenges related to diversity and inclusion in science
  • Examples of the impact of SENCER practice on career advancement
