SB Faculty Mentor 34 Intel Semifinalists

SB Intel 1Thirty-four high school students who worked with Stony Brook faculty have been named among the 300 semifinalists in the national 2009-2010 Intel Science Talent Search competition. The faculty mentors come from a range of departments and disciplines throughout Stony Brook, including Anesthesiology, Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science, Dental School-Oral Biology, Ecology and Evolution, Geosciences, Materials Science and Engineering, Medicine, Neurobiology and Behavior, Pharmacological Sciences, Physics and Astronomy, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Psychology, School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, and the C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics.

Ten semifinalist projects were mentored by faculty in the Department of Chemistry, including the recently announced 2009 Grand Prize winner of the Siemens Competition, Ruoyi Jiang of Ward Melville High School in East Setauket.

The semifinalists and their schools will each receive $1,000. A number of the Intel semifinalists participated in summer research programs at Stony Brook, including the Garcia Center: Polymers at Engineered Interfaces – Research Scholar Program (5) and the Simons Summer Research Program (12). Twenty-nine of the 34 semifinalists are from New York (61 semifinalists from Long Island); other semifinalists working with Stony Brook faculty included students from Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Texas.
