The Jazz Loft in Stony Brook Village is the new home of Swing Dance Long Island’s (SDLI) monthly dances, with the first one kicking off on Saturday, September 10. This is a venue change for any SBU students that used to attend SDLI Saturday dances at the Brush Barn in Smithtown. The Jazz Loft is located at 275 Christian Avenue in Stony Brook. With winter behind us, it’s time to enjoy a fun-filled spring celebration in the Stony Brook Village Center. Spring Appreciation Day will take place in and around the Village on Saturday, April 16, starting at noon. The Ward Melville Heritage Organization (WMHO) will host the 22nd annual “Walk for Beauty, in a Beautiful Place” on Sunday, October 25, in Stony Brook Village. This is the second year that Walk for Beauty offers three events in one: a 4K Color Splash, 4K/6K Walk and a 10K “Hercules on the Harbor” timed run sanctioned by USA Track & Field. Stony Brook Joins Community for Rt. 25A Clean Up More than 60 Stony Brook University students answered the call to help clean up the Long Island Railroad station and surrounding area on Saturday, April 11, doubling the number of volunteers from the University than in previous semesters. With so many helping hands, the garbage cans were quickly overflowing with stuffed bags of litter and debris. More than 40 companies attended the Stony Brook University Business Connections networking breakfast, “How to Tap University Resources,” on Friday, March 20, at the Hilton Garden Inn. The event was held in partnership with the Three Village Chamber of Commerce and opened with remarks by Michael Ardolino, their President Emeritus. The program featured campus departments sharing detailed information on the ways local businesses can improve their bottom line by tapping into resources found at the University. Nearly 60 members of the Three Village Chamber of Commerce gathered to hear President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, speak at their monthly networking meeting, held at the Old Field Club on November 19. The semi-annual cleanup of Rt. 25A near the Stony Brook Long Island Rail Road station took place on Saturday, October 11, despite a driving rain and cooler temperatures. More than 30 Stony Brook students volunteered from 8 am to 11 am to rake leaves, plant flowers and trim bushes. The students were coordinated through the Office of Commuter Student Services and Off-Campus Living and worked side by side with the Greening of 25A Committee and County Legislator Kara Hahn, as well as members of the Civic Association of Stony Brook and the Setaukets and the Three Village Chamber of Commerce.

Six new businesses projected to create 90 new jobs are coming to the Stony Brook area due to Stony Brook University’s participation in START-UP NY, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has announced. The businesses are among the latest wave of companies participating in the new initiative that creates tax-free areas associated with colleges and universities across the state.
