The QS World University Rankings 2018 places Stony Brook among the top 1.4 percent of all universities in the world. More than 950 of the world’s best universities were included in the rankings. This year’s QS World University rankings were compiled by assessing institutions on six different indicators (the full methodology can be found here). More than 75,000 academics and 40,000 employers contributed this year, while 12.3 million papers and 71.5 million citations were analyzed to measure the impact of the research produced by each university. SUNY ranked 38th in the “Top 100 Worldwide Universities Granted U.S. Utility Patents for 2016,” according to the National Academy of Inventors and Intellectual Property Owners Association, which publishes the ranking annually based on U.S. Patent and Trademark Office data. SUNY campuses overall were awarded 57 U.S. utility patents. Stony Brook University’s has made the 2017 Most Promising Places to Work in Student Affairs, a national recognition that celebrates student affairs workplaces that are vibrant, diverse, supportive and committed to staff work-life balance, professional development and inclusive excellence. The study is administered by the Center for Higher Education Enterprise (CHEE) along with Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine and the American College Personnel Association (ACPA). Stony Brook University has placed seventh on a nationwide list of the most diverse campuses in the country. BestColleges.com, an online resource analyzing trends in higher education, used data from the Department of Education in partnership with data studio Priceonomics to rank top colleges and universities according to racial and ethnic diversity. The level of diversity was classified using the Herfindahl–Hirschman Index (HHI), a calculation that measures diversity in a variety of settings.
