2002 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient Dario Gonzales, MD graduated from Stony Brook’s School of Medicine in 2002. When faced with tragedy, Dr. Gonzalez has shown himself to be a true hero. He has been called to aid others through such events as the Oklahoma City bombing and the attacks on September 11, 2001 and has responded without hesitation. 2000 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient Robert Sandhaus, MD graduated from Stony Brook’s School of Medicine in 1976. Dedicating his career to helping others, Dr. Robert Sandhaus has proved to be a valuable contributor to the scientific community. His area of study has focused on alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency (AIAD), and “a genetic clue” that links emphysema to possible causes. In March of 2000, he was named Executive Vice President and Medical Director of Alpha One Foundation (a not-for-profit Florida corporation that aims to control and cure AIAD and to improve the quality of life for those with the disorder).
