Video On May 25, 2007, the demolition team has been at work
for only two days. Already, the counters have been removed
from the Main Dining Room and the West Servery (formerly Deng Lee’s). Only in the East
Servery does the former counter for Burger King remain. This white Corian counter top sits
over the original stainless steel steam-well counter that was part of the original equipment when
Roth was fixed meal, “all-you-can-eat” cafeteria. In the West Dining Room,
construction workers prepare to dissemble the large recessed door that separate that room from the
Main Dining Room. The brick wall in the background will be opened to become the main entrance
doors for the new food court, which will face Tabler Quad. The former West Dining Room will
become an entrance lobby and lounge for the Roth Cafe building. In the
kitchen and in the Main Dining Room Panorama, construction workers clean up dust and debris
associated with the removal of communication wires, utility connections, and ceiling tiles.

On May 16, 2007, the day after Roth Dining Hall closed, equipment was already
being salvaged from the kitchen and serving areas. The Servery
West, which was the site of the first Burger King ever to be installed in a university resident
dining hall, has served its last Whopper. The Servery East, which was
the site of “Deng Lee’s”, named after two long-time Stony Brook culinary staff, is being replaced in
the Fall 2007 with “Bamboo” in the Stony Brook Union Commons Food Court. In the panorama, movers are packing up tables and chairs in the Main Dining
Room. The view of the Main Dining Room facing southwest shows the
chairs in boxes, ready to move out. These chairs and their tables will be refinished and take
on a new life in Wolfie’s, the new restaurant in the Stony Brook Union, that will open in September,
2007. |
