1. GUEST LECTURES/SPEAKERS/Q&A SESSIONS

·         Guest lectures were wonderful and one should have more

·         The last guest speaker was great and the political scientist too

·         The guest speakers gave us a better interpretation of the readings

·         It was a real change compared to regular classes

·         Guest lectures gave us different perspectives

·         I really enjoyed the lectures of other professors

 

 

2. POWER POINT BRIEFINGS, QUIZZES & DISCUSSIONS

·         It was helpful to post briefings on our website and not have to copy it all down

·         The briefings were very informative

·         All above were good

·         Sometimes we run through PowerPoint too quickly

·         PowerPoint made it more interesting and easier to follow

·         The class discussions were very engaging

 

 

3. READINGS

·         They were really good and eye-opening

·         I liked the readings about the global sex trade

·         Some readings were lengthy, some were repetitive

·         Liked the readings about nuclear weapons

·         Excellent readings but sometimes they were too long

·         Readings presented a non-traditional view

·         Readings were from interesting sources

·         The readings offered a wide variety of interesting material and sources for books I bought

 

 

4. INSTRUCTOR/TA/SYLLABUS/CLASS EMAILS

·         Excellent topic & lectures—emails were interesting

·         The instructor was really good

·         Always informative

·         Was good

·         All above was very interesting, very relevant, and very engaging

·         Grading was transparent

·         Very fair

·         Was all good

 

 

6. MID-TERM TEST/TERM PAPER/ VOLUNTARY STUDENT PROJECT

·         Voluntary project was a great experience

·         The midterm was good because it stuck with the reading

·         Liked the flexibility

·         All was good

·         The voluntary project allowed me to explore a topic that was interesting to me

·         I liked the final take home essay

·         The United Nations trip was an A++

·         This was my best class ever!

·         The class topic on globalization (3)

·         The opportunity for discussions

·         The context of the class

·         My friends in the class

·         The class title sounded very interesting

 

 

10. Name the most important things you learned about globalization?

·         The world is fragile and we need to be concerned about it

·         The need for compassion and seeing the interconnectedness of things

·         Globalization affects everyone and we should be more involved

·         Nuclear weapons proliferation, war, and poverty

·         The roles of the IMF, of the U.S., and its effects on Third World economies

·         Multinational corporations, the UN, Weapons of Mass Destruction

·         The definition of globalization and how it works in our world

·         There are some nations that suffer unnecessary & political regimes don’t seem to what they appear to be in reality

·         The economic effects of globalization on the Third World and the role of arms proliferation and the arms race

 

 

11. What most important thing did you learn from the United nations field trip?

·         The purpose of the UN and its perspectives on world affairs

·         How central the UN is politically

·         Learned a lot from the briefing by the UN Ambassador

·         It was just fascinating to go there & and I also liked the art display

·         The U.S. has always been a big bully

·         There is a larger world out there then I presumed

·         Learned about rhe role of the Security Council

 

 

12. WHAT IMPORTANT QUESTIONS REMAIN UNANSWERED IN THIS FLC CLASS?

·         Why are they terminating the FLC at Stony Brook? Its crazy!

·         What more solutions do we have for global issues

·         Why does the U.S. support Israel?

·         How to combat the negative sides of globalization

·         The future effects of globalization

·         Why does the inequitable distribution of power and wealth exist in the world

·         Where is capitalism heading?

 

 

13. IF YOU WERE FLC INSTRUCTOR, WHAT THINGS WOULD YOU CHANGE?

·         Nothing—maybe send out briefings every two weeks via email

·         Have more field trips and give students more opportunity to make a change

·         More lectures, the use of Blackboard, more class discussions

·         Nothing, instructor did a good job

·         I would have more than one field trip

·         Offer a “major” on the subject of globalization at Stony Brook

·         The department/administration which is doing away with such good programs

·         To receive the Globalization minor

·         I have found the class very interesting & I want to learn more about globalization & I am interested in the topic for the next semester

·         My interest in globalization, extra time and involvement in student organization

 

 

16. IF YOU WILL NOT CONTINUE THE FLC IN FALL, WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN REASONS TO DISCONTINUE THE PROGRAM?

·         I am graduating (7)

·         I have finished with the minor next Spring

·         Does not fit into the classes I need

·         I would elect a major in globalization but its not offered

 

 

17. If Stony Brook University were to offer a major AND minor program in Globalization, would you elect a major? Please give three reasons why or why not.

·         Yes (2)

·         Yes!!! It is important

·         Yes, I think it is an excellent program and I think it will boost my marketability for jobs and graduate programs plus it includes vital information for college students

·         Yes, it is an interesting subject and relevant to real life

·         Yes because its interesting, incorporates all fields of study, and is important to understand how the world is working

·         Yes, now that SSI is gone, I would chose that program

·         Yes, I would definitely take a Global Studies major. SB should continue the program and be a leader in the field about the future of the world

·         No, I am graduating but I would recommend the minor to other students. We need more people being aware of world issues

·         No, Sociology (my major) deals to a certain extent already with global issues

·         No, it would be too depressing and not to mention time consuming
