Applying for Federal Aid

In order to be considered for financial aid from the Federal Title IV programs, students must meet basic eligibility requirements. Please review the U.S. Department of Education's Funding Education Beyond High School: The Guide to Federal Student Aid for specific eligibility details.

The federal financial aid application process begins with the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students and parents who file a US Federal Tax Return are strongly encouraged to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) when completing their FAFSA.

In order for us to receive a copy of your FAFSA results, you must include the Stony Brook University federal school code 002838 when completing your FAFSA.

Recommended Steps Prior to Completing the FAFSA

  • Apply for a federal PIN (Personal Identification Number): The student and one parent, if the student is a dependent student, should apply for a federal PIN. The PIN application can be found at http://www.pin.ed.gov.
