Applying for Federal Aid
In order to be considered for financial aid from the Federal Title IV program students must meet basic eligibility requirements. Please review the student aid handbook, Funding Education Beyond High School,* created by the Federal Department of Education for specific eligibility details.
The federal financial aid application process begins with the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Remember to include the Stony Brook University federal school code, 002838, when completing your FAFSA. While paper applications are available at your local high school and in the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship Services, it is highly recommended that you complete the application on-line at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. It is also recommended that prior to completion of the FAFSA on the web, the student and one parent, if the student is a dependent student, apply for a federal PIN. The PIN application can be found at http://www.pin.ed.gov.
Before filing the FAFSA online, we highly encourage you to:
Print a FAFSA on the Web Worksheet *
The FAFSA on the Web Worksheet allows you to read and complete the questions before entering your information online.
To avoid processing delays of your financial aid application, the staff of the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship Serviceshas compiled a list of the most common mistakes made when completing the FAFSA or making corrections.

Applying for Parent PLUS Loans
In addition to the student having filed a FAFSA a parent of a dependent student must complete the PLUS Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN) on-line at New York State Higher Education. It is recommended that the parent/student wait until the receipt of their first University bill so that they will be able to more accurately determine the amount required.
