Petition for Dependency Override

If you are currently considered a dependent student when applying for federal student aid, but due to extenuating circumstances, you feel that you should be considered independent. Please complete the Dependency Override form with the required documentation and submit to the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship Services.

Please Note the Following :

  • A student's reluctance to request income information from parents or the unwillingness of parents to pay or provide information is NOT justification for granting a dependency override.
  • The fact that you are self-supporting is, by itself NOT justification for granting a dependency override.
  • Examples of situations where petitions may be approved include an abusive family environment or removal of the student from the parent(s) residence by court order.
  • A successful petition for a dependency override depends on the specific information and documentation you provide. Attach appropriate legal documents to support your petition.

If you would like to be considered for a dependency override, download and submit the Petition for Dependency Override which may be downloaded from our forms page.
