Director of Environmental Health & Safety
Gary Kaczmarczyk joined Stony Brook in 1994 as Assistant Director with the Department of Environmental Health and Safety and was promoted to Director in 2005. In addition to serving as the University's 'Safety Officer', Gary is the Responsible Official for Select Agents, and also serves on the University Radiation Protection Committee (URPC), the Laboratory Safety Council and the Provost's Risk Assessment and Security Committee. Following the tragic events of September 11, 2001, Gary served as Co-Emergency Management Coordinator to develop and implement an Emergency Management Plan and recommendations of the Presidentís Emergency Task Force. Gary continues to work closely with University Police and the Office of Emergency Management in the planning of campus events and serves on the Emergency Management Committee.
Gary began his career in construction safety in 1975 with Stone & Webster Engineering at the Shoreham Nuclear Power Station and then transferred to the Millstone Nuclear Plant in Waterford CT. In 1986 he returned to Long Island to accept a Safety Engineer position with Grumman Aerospace in Bethpage and at their Final Assembly and Flight Test Facility in Calverton, NY. In 1989 Gary accepted a Safety Engineer position at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Safety & Environmental Protection Division, and was later appointed as Manager of Safety, Training and Quality for the Plant Engineering Division.
Gary has a Master of Science degree in Technological Systems Management from Stony Brook ('92), and a Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Safety & Health from the University of New Haven, CT. Gary is a NYS Certified Code Enforcement Official. He is a Past-President of the American Society of Safety Engineers, and is a member of Campus Safety, Health, and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA), the SEHSA Environmental Health & Safety Association of NY, and the National Safety Council.
Gary lives in Wading River with his wife Patty. They have two sons, Brian and Eric, who have both graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York City with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
