MSTP Project: Mathematics Across the Middle
School MST Curriculum
Overview:
The MSTP Project is a collaboration of faculty and staff from Hofstra
University, Stony Brook University, Brookhaven National Laboratory,
and with ten Long Island school districts. The MSTP Project engages
300 teachers, 20 higher education math, engineering, and science faculty,
and 11,000 students (including 25 undergraduate interns) per year.

The Project’s goal is targeted towards improving teaching and
learning middle level mathematics in ten districts on Long Island,
New York, where a majority of students fail to meet state standards
in mathematics. Core and supporting partners are developing and implementing
a program model that increases the diversity of New York’s teaching
workforce; enhances university faculty’s understanding of middle
school reform, learning standards, and assessments; increases middle
school mathematics, science, and technology teachers’ understanding
of mathematics content and pedagogy; and improves curriculum alignment
among the three disciplines.
Internship Selection Criteria:
• Must be a CSTEP (College Science and Technology Entry Program)
student
• Must be a New York State Resident
• Must be a member of a definite ethnic minority or student
