TechPREP

TechPREP is supported through an Innovation Generation grant provided by the Motorola Foundation. TechPREP is a collaborative program effort between the University’s Liberty Partnership, STEP, and the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) programs. Involved departments are Computer Science and Technology and Society. The goal of the TechPREP program is to raise the comfort level towards Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) amongst middle school girls. To achieve this we have created a series of three learning modules that will be offered over the course of the next three years to cohorts of young women attending middle schools in two local high needs school districts on Long Island. The modules are:1. Introduction to Computing and Computers, 2. Foundations in Mathematics and Physics, and 3. Engineering Applications. Each of the modules includes classroom instruction, hands-on activities, and a strong mentoring component. Our mentors, known as SISTERs (Sisters in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Research), work with the young women in small groups. We presented the first module over the course of seven weekends during the spring of 2009. The program culminates in a two-week long summer day camp.
