March is Workplace Eye Health and Safety Month

Prevent Blindness America®, the nation's leading volunteer eye health and safety organization, has designated March as "Workplace Eye Heath and Safety Awareness" month. According to the U.S. Occupational Heath and Safety Administration (OSHA), there are an estimated 1,000 eye injuries each month and approximately 10-20% of these injuries will result in temporary or permanent vision loss.

Eye injuries are most commonly caused by:

  1. flying particles (most far smaller than a pinhead)
  2. flying objects
  3. being struck by tools
  4. chemical splashes
  5. harmful radiation

In its Fact Sheet No. OSHA 93-03 (Eye Protection in the Workplace), OSHA lists the two most prevalent causes of eye injuries as flying particles & contact with chemicals.
