Stony Brook University Annual Campus Fire Prevention Day

Fire safety education is an effective method of reducing the occurrence of fires, loss of life and destruction of property. The Stony Brook University Fire Marshals will be hosting our annual campus fire prevention day on Wednesday September 19th 2012. One of our recent additions was developed to reduce cooking related fire alarms on campus. We have joined forces with Campus Dining to provide educational workshops for our students and conduct live cooking demonstrations from an Executive Chef, focusing on cooking safety. Other programs include demonstrations from local volunteer fire departments, Underwriters labs, Simplex Grinnell, University Police, Environmental Health & Safety and the MTA Police department. Guests will also have the opportunity to practice using a fire extinguisher to extinguish a fire.

On January 19, 2000 a fire raged through Seton Hall University's freshman dormitory, killing three students and injuring fifty-eight others. Among the survivors were Shawn Simons and Alvaro Llanos. We are pleased to announce that Shawn and Al will be sharing their story to the campus community on Tuesday November 13th 2012 at Noble Halls beginning at 8:00 pm. During this time, the movie about the Seton Hall tragedy will be shown. In addition to the above program, Shawn Simons will be attending our fire prevention day. In addition, a book signing by the Author of the national bestseller AFTER THE FIRE, Robin Gaby Fisher will take place at our annual campus fire prevention day on Wednesday September 19th.
