Pollution Prevention

Stony Brook University's prevent pollution objective is to reduce hazardous waste generated to the lowest practical amount. By reducing the volume and toxicity of hazardous waste, adverse impacts on the air, water, land and the University community are minimized.

What are Environmental Health and Safety's responsibilities?

Environmental Health and Safety will help the University minimize the generation of waste by promoting source reduction, recycling and disposing of waste in a responsible manner. EH&S has submitted a Hazardous Waste Reduction Plan (in Adobe PDF format), along with annual updates, to the NYSDEC.

Environmental Health and Safety has developed a training program (in Adobe PDF format) to keep the University community informed on possible pollution prevention opportunities in their area.

What pollution prevention opportunities are available at home?

There are many ways to reduce waste at home. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has information on pollution prevention at home.

Visit the EPA web site for more information on the Pollution Prevention Act of 1990.
