In keeping with the University President's initiatives on community
and diversity, the Office of Diversity and Affirmative Action will promote
and encourage programs and activities that will contribute to all individuals
and groups being at "home" at the University. The Office of
Diversity and Affirmative Action is the primary advocate for multiculturalism
and diversity at the University. Our clients are derived from all areas
of the University, representing world renowned faculty; administrative
and support staff; undergraduate and graduate students; their parents;
and community-based organizations. It is vital to the success of the
University that we provide a positive, supportive, respectful, caring
and customer-oriented environment for all who contact the Office. The
Office of Diversity and Affirmative Action is committed to maintaining
and developing an Affirmative Action Program that meets Federal and
State mandates effectively and efficiently while maximizing proactive
Affirmative Action and Equal Employment Opportunity activities.
The Primary functions of Office of Diversity and Affirmative Action
are:
- Program and Policy development
- Compliance - Ensure CampusCompliance with State and Federal laws
and regulations.
- Affirmative Action/Equal Employment Opportunity (AA/EEO)
- Training and Development
- Complaint Resolution
- Diversity Initiatives
- Design Proactive Outreach and Strategic planning
- Minority Women Business Enterprise
Prepare annual compliance reports.The office administers the affirmative
action program which demonstrates the University's continuous efforts
in providing equal access to employment opportunities to qualified members
of protected classes. This includes recruitment activities, promotion
activities, and training activities for upward mobility to qualified
employees.
Develop programs/training modules. Upon request, the office staff will
conduct specific training modules for the University community on the
education and prevention of discrimination in the workplace and in the
classroom and other AA/EEO issues. Pamphlets and posters covering all
AA/EEO related issues are produced for campus-wide distribution, and
a supply is maintained in our office.
Resolve allegations of discrimination. The office accepts discrimination
complaints from employees; individuals who have business with the University
and/or approved use of University facilities; vendors; contractors;
and persons who are interviewed for vacant positions. Students are protected
under Title IX of the 1972 Educational Amendments; which provide that
no person in the United States be excluded from participation in, be
denied benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education
program or activity receiving federal financial assistance on the basis
of sex.
