Policy Statement


It is the policy of the State of University of New York at Stony Brook to provide equal employment opportunity to all people without regard to race, sex, religion, age, national origin, disability, or Vietnam Era Veteran status. The State University of New York at Stony Brook has been and continues to be, committed to the practice and concept of Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action all aspects of employment. This Affirmative Action Program has been established pursuant to Executive Order 11246, as amended, Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 as amended, and the Veterans Readjustment Act of 1974, as amended, assuring that the SUNY at Stony Brook will act affirmatively in the development of proactive outreach activities and avenues of entry and mobility in the recruitment, hiring, promotion, training and retention of minorities, women, the disabled, disabled veterans and Vietnam Era Veterans through the following activities:

  • Development of programmatic approaches to the elimination of all unjust exclusionary employment practices, policies and consequences.
  • Development of personnel practices, policies and procedures to encourage entry and equal access for all protected class people.
  • Establishment of uniform selection procedures for ensuring a fair selection process and system for all applicants and employees.
  • Implementation of mechanisms for swift and judicious resolution of problems of human rights discrimination consistent with our policy and applicable legal statutes.
  • Establishment of goals and timetables as reasonably attainable affirmative recruitment efforts.
  • Institution of internal audit and reporting systems for the purpose of measuring program effectiveness and affirmative activity progress.
  • Expansion of training and development programs with an emphasis on affirmative and diversity concerns.

This Affirmative Action Policy statement is a re-affirmation of the commitment of the University to insure that all personnel actions such as recruitment, hiring, promotions, training, transfers, compensation, benefits, leaves of absence, reduction in force, reinstatements, restructuring, social and recreational programs will be administered without regard of race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
