Camp Academies 2009

girl in classNew Camps, More Choices, More Fun
Our Camp Academies are for children entering kindergarten through grade 11 in Fall 2009. The specialty academies are designed to satisfy campers with an interest in art, acting, chess, Game Builders programs, the sciences, forensics, reading, and music. Some programs will receive a full day of instruction and other programs offer a half day. Half-day programs will offer two hours of athletic activities and one hour of swimming. A hot lunch and snack are included within each program, and enrollment is limited to 20 students per class all on a first come, first served basis, therefore no early registration or faculty/discounts will be given.

Acting Academy
for ages 10 to 15

Campers will be exposed to acting through speech, dance, gesture, stagehand work, and more. Your end result will be a final performance of a production play. Campers should consider two consecutive weeks of Acting Camp as final performances are on July 17 and August 21.

Animals A-Z Academy and Reading Ready Academy
for ages 5 to 6
For the first half of the day, young campers will learn all about the different array of animals, the animals’ habitats, and regions where they live, and for the second half of the day our reading program will boost your child’s reading comprehension and enhance various language skills.

Art Academy
for ages 13 to 15

In this Studio Art Academy, students explore 2-D design through the use of basic concepts of shape, value, line, space, linear perspective, and texture. Students will participate in guided drawing exercises developing techniques and approaches with both group and individualized instruction for half the day.

Chess Academy
for ages 8 to 15
Learning to play chess at any level from beginner to advanced has the benefits of increasing your critical thinking, perception, and ability to problem solve and strategize, and it’s all in a day’s fun.

Chess/Medical Academy
for ages 8 to 15
Split your day enjoying the game of chess for half the day and for the other half going to mini-medical school. Created and run by Stony Brook Medical School faculty, the Medical Academy provides campers with ample opportunities to participate in a variety of medically relevant activities including hands-on diagnostic testing, interacting with doctors, and learning about and conducting biomedical research.

Create A Tale—Creative Writing Academy

for ages 8 to 10
Ever loved a story so much that you wanted to be in it? Now you can! Campers will use their wildest imaginations to create and illustrate their own picture books.

handsCreatures-Out-of-Clay Academy and Taxi-Me-Through-NYC Academy
for ages 5 to 7
Mold a monster, shape a seahorse—make anything! Hands, clay, and your imagination are all you will need. In part two of this academy, children will gain knowledge of the five boroughs, including museums and gardens. Campers will learn all about the city that’s right in our backyard.

Earth, Space, and Science Academy
for ages 8 to 10
Campers will spend three hours daily at the Museum of Long Island Natural Sciences, Department of Geosciences, where they will experience a variety of scientific adventures. Through nature walks, lab activities, and crafts (most geared to the elementary science core curriculum) campers will explore the world around them.

Forensics
for ages 9 to 15
WHO DID IT? Join our junior forensics team to learn about lifting a fingerprint or determining what type of bicycle tire made the tracks, and examining items using a black light. This academy will broaden your science knowledge.

Game Builders Academy: 3-D Computer Modeling and Animation Academy

This course offers students an exciting introduction to the world of computer-generated 3-D modeling and animation. Students will use software to create three-dimensional, computer-generated models, and then will learn how to create their own 3-D characters, apply textures, and add animation for use in video games and short movies.

Game Builders Academy—Robotics Level 1†
for ages 9 to 15

Students will learn the fundamental engineering and technical principles of building and programming robots to move and function autonomously (on their own). Through the use of sound, light, and touch sensors students will be able to program their robots to “see, hear, and perceive” their surroundings. Students learn how to use the actions and reactions of the robots to strategically solve problems and puzzles and most important, have fun doing it!

Game Builders Academy: Starburst Academy and Music Madness†
for ages 5 to 6
Students learn how to apply basic math and other skills to design and program their own video games! Students also learn how to draw their own game characters on the computer and add sound to their games. Each child in this course will create at least one full working video game. In our Music Madness Academy campers will sing and dance to the beat! Express yourself while learning about the sounds that create the music we love and the instruments that make them.

Game Builders Academy: Starburst Academy and Sign Language†
for ages 7 to 9
Students learn how to apply basic math and other skills to design and program their own video games! Students also learn how to draw their own game characters on the computer and add sound to their games. Each child in this course will create at least one full working video game. In sign language did you know that body language is an integral part of communicating? So let’s all learn the basics of sign language in this academy.

Game Builders Academy: Intro to Video Game Design and Development†
for ages 9 to 15
Students use math, logic, communication, concentration, and critical thinking skills; problem solving; and creative thinking—all in the context of learning how to design video games. This course offers students an exciting introduction to the technical and artistic concepts and techniques of designing and programming video games in which students will create at least one full working video game.

Game Builders Academy: Video Game Design—Level 1†
for ages 9 to 15
Students who have taken the introductory level continue to build their knowledge, learning and employing more advanced game development techniques. Students create a new two-dimensional game and add advanced features and capabilities beyond their introductory-level games, adding custom sound effects and animations to their games. Students create at least one multilevel game and a number of mini-games. Prerequisite: Intro to Video Game Design and Development.

Medical
for ages 8 to 15

Music Madness Academy and Just Beachy Academy
for ages 5 to 7
Sing and dance to the beat! Express yourself while learning about the sounds that create the music we love and the instruments that make them. Let’s walk along the shoreline in our imaginations and discover what the sea has to offer us, how many different shells there are, and where seaweed comes from. Our campers will be fascinated to hear the music from our oceans.

Origami Academy and See Sea Below Academy
for ages 7 to 8
No glue or cutting is necessary for this academy, just folding. Origami is the ancient Japanese art of paper folding. Join us to create some beautiful origami projects! What creatures are deep, deep within our sea; can plants grow deep below without any light; can anyone see the sea that deep?

Write to Act (Creative Writing)
for ages 11 to 15
And cue the curtain! Ever wonder what really goes into the script of your favorite play or musical? Ever wish your friends could act out a play that you wrote? Well here’s your chance to find out. In this one-week session, campers will learn how to write a short play which could be performed by our very own Acting Academy. Think about signing up for an Acting Academy so you can act in your own play!
