A full-day academy. Learn to play chess at any
level from beginner to advanced. Chess has

From beginner to advanced, chess will challenge you to problem solve and strategize for half of the day. The Medical half of the day will offer you a variety of medically-relevant and scientific activities.

Heroes & Legends, 5th to 10th Grade
This Creative Writing Academy through a variety of print and multimedia sources will look at the historical and literary origins of popular tales and heroes. Campers will gain an appreciation of the complexity and poetic qualities of these tales. Campers will explore "modern" heroes and discuss their connections to literary figures.

Medical, 3rd to 8th Grade
Created and run by Stony Brook School of Medicine Faculty, this academy provides campers with ample opportunity to participate in a variety of medically relevant and scientific activities, including hands-on diagnostic testing, interactions with medical doctors, and biomedical research experiments.

Jungle Bob Presents, 3rd to 8th Grade
Jungle Bob has been a staple of The Summer Camp calendar for many years and will return for 2013 with a week-long academy. Campers will have an "Experience of a Lifetime" interacting with his exotic Reptiles, Amphibians and Invertebrates. They will learn about conservation through education and explore the "Reptile World."

Exploration of Space, 3rd to 10th Grade
Blast off into this exciting academy. Campers will build their own rocket and launch it into the sky. Children will also explore gravity, outer space, and our planetary system.

Learn about lifting a fingerprint or determining what type of bicycle tire made the tracks, and examine items using a black light. This academy will broaden your science knowledge.

Sports Medicine: Prevention & Taping, 5th to 10th Grade
This Academy focuses on common injuries that occur in sports, what to do in case of an emergency, and taping methods such as ankle, hand and wrist taping. The camper will also learn the basic anatomy pertinent to athletic injuries, the principles of injury prevention and injury evaluation techniques.

Sports Medicine: Prevention & Rehabilitation, 5th to 10th Grade
The focus of this academy is on injury prevention and rehabilitation. Campers will learn the common exercises geared towards prevention of athletic related injuries and rehabilitation exercises used after different injuries. They will also see and get hands-on experience using the latest products in post-op and functional bracing and support.

Performing Arts Academies
Acting Academy, 4th to 10th Grade
This is a two-week course in which campers will be exposed to acting through speech, dance, gesture, stagehand work, and more. The end result will be a final performance of a production for all our campers, family, and friends.
Weeks 5 & 6 • July 22 to August 2
Band Academy, 3rd to 8th Grade
Campers will be exposed to a variety of music, such as jazz and popular concert band music. They will participate in a group instrumental lesson, a large group band rehearsal, and a basic note reading and writing lesson. This is for continuing band students only. At the end of the academy, students will perform a concert for family.

Dance Academy, 3rd to 8th Grade
Campers will explore the basic fundamentals of ballet, tap, jazz, and hip-hop. Through fun activities, campers will learn how music and movement relate. Dancers must provide their own ballet slippers, tap shoes, and jazz shoes.

Lego Flix, 3rd to 8th Grade
We know you love Legos and we know you can create incredible worlds. Now it’s time to bring those worlds to life in Lego animated flix! We provide the Legos, and you provide your imagination. Students will create a Lego set with Lego characters for a movie they storyboard, write, shoot, and voice-over in age appropriate groups. Each camper will receive a DVD of their created camp project.

Musical Theatre, 4th to 10th Grade
Campers have the opportunity to explore the fundamentals of Musical Theatre. They will spend 2 weeks learning performance techniques, costume design, set prep and more. Campers will be able to showcase their skills at a final performance for friends, family, and the entire camp.

Photography Academy, 4th to 10th Grade
Campers will be taught the basics of the world of photography, as they will explore the campus, taking shots of various subjects, learn the fundamentals of location and studio lighting, and learn the basic functions of a Digital SLR camera. Campers will be supplied DSLR cameras to use during this academy.

Intro to Video Production, 6th to 10th Grade
This course will cover basic to intermediate video techniques. A wide range of digital HD camera equipment will be discussed and accessed for best applications. Hands-on experience will be gained using consumer and professional video camera equipment in a realistic production atmosphere. Course taught by Emmy Award Winning Producer/Director of Photography with over 30 years of experience in the video and television industry.

Designed for campers who wish to explore more advanced video and television production applications. More than just pointing a camera, integrating audio sound production and lighting techniques, hands-on experience will be gained using professional audio gear including microphones, mixers, boom poles and more. Come cook with our chefs! Campers will spend three hours daily within our dining hall, learning how to prepare certain foods from a large variety of selected food groups. This Academy will explore the basics of food preparation, measuring, and menu planning.

Nutrition from the Farm, 6th to 10th Grade
Campers will have the opportunity to work on the Stony Brook Heights Rooftop Farm, where a wide variety of herbs and vegetables are grown. They will plant, maintain, and harvest these foods and create healthy menu options using fresh ingredients. This academy will be taught by a Registered Dietitian.

Intro to Video Game Design, 3rd to 10th Grade
Campers use math, logic, communication, concentration, and critical thinking skills; problem solving; and creative thinking—all in the context of learning how to design video games. This academy offers campers an exciting introduction to the technical and artistic concepts and techniques of designing and programming video games. This academy can be taken multiple times.

Video Game Programming, 3rd to 10th Grade
Campers continue to build more advanced game development techniques. They create a new two-dimensional game and add advanced features and capabilities beyond their introductory-level games, adding custom sound effects and animations.

Intro to Fashion Design, 3rd to 10th Grade
Beginner fashion designers will create their own exciting collection line, and select patterns, style, and colors based on their own trends. These young entrepreneurs will learn the processes and mechanical skills needed to design a marketable and fashionable clothing collection.

Robotics, Level 1, 3rd to 10th Grade
Campers will learn the fundamental engineering and technical principles of building and programming robots to move and function. Through the use of sound, light, and touch sensors, campers will be able to program their robots to "see, hear, and perceive" their surroundings.

3-D Modeling & Animation, 3rd to 10th Grade
This academy offers students an exciting introduction to the world of computer-generated 3-D modeling and animation. Campers will use software to create three-dimensional, computer-generated models, and then will learn how to create their own 3-D characters, apply textures, and add animation for use in video games and short movies.

VR Quest, 5th to 10th Grade
The mission of VR Quest™ is dedicated to integrating the latest educational virtual reality technology into the classroom. Campers will fully immerse themselves into a virtual reality. Campers will build their very own virtual reality game based on
research they conduct.
