On November 12, 2012 Mr. Xu Jialu, met with representatives of seven New York area Confucius Institutes including those at Stony Brook University, the China Institute, Columbia University, SUNY Confucius Institute for Business, SUNY College of Optometry, Alfred University and Pace University. After a meeting discussing “New China Studies”, the CI Headquarters new initiative focusing on integrating the study of Chinese language and culture, Mr. XU gave a lecture on “The Essence of Chinese Culture and Contemporary China.” His remarks explained the characteristics of Chinese culture from 4 distinct vantage points: the universe in the eyes of Chinese, how the Chinese view themselves, how the Chinese view others and Chinese aesthetics. The lecture provided the audience with new perspectives to approach and better understand Chinese culture, history and philosophy. Mr. XU Jialu was the Vice-Chairman of the 9th and 10th National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee and currently serves as President of the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching. He also serves as the Director of the Chinese Language & Culture College and the Institute for Advanced Study of the Humanities and Religion at Beijing Normal University.
