The Confucius Institute at Stony Brook University (CISBU) has achieved great successes in impacting the community while exploring a new and locally tailored operational style. Dr. Williams Arens, Director of CISBU, beamed with excitement while sharing with the reporter the history of CISBU. CISBU was inaugurated by China’s State Councilor Madame Liu Yandong in 2008. Since then, CISBU has been offering Chinese language teaching and operating a Chinese language library, conducting traditional and contemporary Chinese cultural enrichment activities, hosting Chinese language proficiency test, organizing Confucius Institute Scholarship application, as well as training local Chinese language teachers. Dr. Arens also added that, full of pride, in addition to regular events such as Chinese language classes, Lecture Series and Chinese Traditional Festival Celebrations, CISBU paid great attention to program innovation, contemporary cultural exchange between China and the U.S. and some fundamental issues of CISBU. Its event quality and influence are further improved in 2012. CISBU serves as a resource for Stony Brook University and the surrounding community and aims to enhance the community’s understanding of Chinese language and culture. In addition, CISBU seeks to strengthen cultural exchanges and cooperation between China and the United States. CISBU has held various cultural events and shown the University and the neighborhood communities the essence of Chinese culture. These events include Chinese arts performance, such as those during Spring Festival and Mid-autumn Festival Evening Gala when professional performance teams were invited to perform; Chinese culture introduction, such as Tea Ceremony event, Chinese Film Series, Summer Camp in China, etc.; and speeches given by experts and professionals. These activities exposed people from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds to the authentic CISBU focuses not only on Chinese traditional culture and events, but also on contemporary cultural exchanges between China and the U.S. as one of the co-sponsors and the organizer, CISBU hosted an international research conference “China and the West: Two Cultures, One Civilization?” on October 25th to 26th, 2012, hosting nine Asian and American scholars for a discussion of Chinese contemporary perspectives on civilization and cultures. More than 200 faculty members and students from Stony Brook University and the outside community attended and participated in this conference. This was a highly attended, well regarded international conference with researchers from China and the U.S. presenting research papers. The conference proceedings will be published to document and publicize such events. CISBU Strives for building good connections both outside and inside the university. We continue to build good relationships with the local community, for example, Asian American Advisory Board, Asian Culture Center and New York Poetry Painting Writing and Chess Association. We also try our best to build cooperation with organizations inside the university. In 2012, we organized the international research conference “China and the West: Two Cultures, One Civilization?” Partnering with Stony Brook University, the Stony Brook Institute for Global Studies (SBIGS) and inviting various other departments within the university to participate. We are also working closely with the Asian and Asian American Studies Department on projects such as the library, HSK and CI scholarships. In addition we have just begun a dialogue regarding the CI composition test with the Chinese language school at Stony Brook. Dr. Arens also reviewed with the reporter that the development of CISBU meets the needs of studying Chinese and learning about Chinese culture on the entire Long Island. It also promotes Sino-U.S mutual understanding, cultural exchanges and cooperation. In 2012 the Confucius Institute was honored by two awards from the communities. One from the Suffolk County Legislature for serving “as a cultural link between the university and the People’s Republic of China offering the community a unique understanding of Chinese language, history and traditions.” The second honor was awarded by the Asian-American Radio Network and the Holiday Inn for the Stony Brook University Confucius Institute’s “Dedication, Support and Leadership of the Asian American Community of Long Island.” These awards were presented by Long Island elected officials: Legislator Kara Hahn and Legislator John M. Kennedy Jr. Looking forward to the future, Dr. Arens said that firstly they would steadily establish and develop Confucius Classrooms. By the year 2015, CISBU will open 1-2 Confucius Classrooms. Secondly, CISBU will work on increasing the number of registered students to the Chinese lessons. By the end of 2015, the total number of registered students is 1500. And the cultural events audience participation reaches 40,000 attendees. Thirdly, CISBU will participate actively in hosting HSK test. By 2015, CISBU is established as a Chinese proficiency test center on Long Island, hosting HSK, HSKK and YCT.
