Major in the
Interdisciplinary Program in Humanities (HUM)
The interdisciplinary major in the Humanities leads to the Bachelor of Arts degree. The following courses are required. All must be taken for a letter grade and passed with a grade of "C" or higher. In choosing courses to satisfy requirements A and B the student should be careful to consider the relevant prerequisites for the epochs chosen for requirement D.
Completion of the major entails 48 credits of which 24 must be in the upper division.
A. Basic Humanities Courses. Six credits (two courses) of 100-level Humanities (HUM) courses.

B. Introductory Coursework. Twelve credits of introductory coursework (four courses numbered in the 100s or 200s) chosen from three of the six following areas:
1. Literature and Culture (HUM, EGL, CLT and other courses in literatures
and cultures)
2. Cinema and Cultural Studies (CCS and courses which apply to the CCS major)
3. Fine Arts: Theatre (THR), Art History (ARH), Music (MUS)
4. History (HIS)
5. Philosophy (PHI)
6. Religious Studies (RLS and pertinent courses under other designators)

C. Language Study. Six credits (or the equivalent of one year) of college study of a language other than English at the intermediate level or beyond. Courses may be in language, literature or culture.

D. Advanced Studies. Twenty-one upper-division credits (seven courses numbered 300 and above) to be distributed as follows: three courses in one of the following epochs and two courses in each of two other epochs. This requirement may be completed by courses with any of the designators listed as long as the student has the proper prerequisites:

2. The Middle Ages [ARH, CLT, EGL, FRN, GER, HIS, ITL, LAT, MUS, MVL, PHI,

4. Neo-Classicism and Enlightenment [ARH, CLT, EGL, FRN, GER, HIS, ITL, MUS,
PHI, RUS, SPN]
5. The Nineteenth-Century Frameworks [AFS, ARH, CLT, EGL, FRN, GER, HIS,
ITL, MUS, PHI, RUS, SPN]
6. Modern and Postmodern Societies and Cultures [AFS, ARH, CCS, CLT, EGL,
FRN, GER, HIS, ITL, HUM, JDH, JDS, MUS, PHI, RLS, RUS, SPN, THR]

E. Senior Seminar. Until the HUM Senior Seminar can be staffed, students are required to take one additional upper-division course or a directed reading (HUM 447).

F. Upper-Division Writing Requirement.
In order to satisfy this requirement, students majoring in Humanities must submit two papers (at least ten pages altogether) written in two different areas or epochs for upper-division courses pertaining to the major to the director of undergraduate studies no later than seven weeks after the start of the first semester of their senior year. They must achieve an evaluation of S (Satisfactory) on the portfolio. Further details are available from the department chairperson or from the director of undergraduate studies.
