Peter Manning works chiefly in the British Romantic period; he continues to try to reconnect texts with the motives from which they spring and the social relations within which they exist. His criticism tracks the convergence of psychoanalysis, textual criticism, and historical scholarship, including materialist histories of the book. Manning is the author of Byron and His Fictions and of Reading Romantics, and the co-editor of Penguin texts of Byron's poetry and of the Romantics volume of the Longman Anthology of British Literature.
